    Kottayam
 
Kottayam is one of the 14 districts in the state of Kerala, India. Located at south-central Kerala [9.36o N and 76.17o E]. According to the 1991 census, it is the first district to achieve highest literacy rate in India - 98%. On 28 September 2008, Kottayam also became the first tobacco free districts in India. The town is an important trading center of spices and commercial crops, especially rubber. Major Kerala print media such as Malayala Manorama, Deepika and Mangalam are headquartered in the town. Kottayam is also known as "Akshara Nagari (City of Alphabets) in honor of its contributions to print media and literature.
Kottayam is bordered by the Western Ghats on the east and the Vembanad Lake and paddy fields of Kuttanad on the west, Kottayam has many unique characteristics. Panoramic backwater stretches, lush paddy fields, highlands, hills and hillocks, rubber plantations and places associated with many legends given Kottayam District the enviable title: The land of letters, legends, latex and lakes.
 
 
 
Kumarakom
Kumarakom (15 kms ) located on the eastern coast of Vembanad Lake, is a beautiful village stocked with divine mangroves and coconut groves, lush green paddy fields, gushing waters snaking through the dense forests. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a noted bird sanctuary and is home to migratory birds like the Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal. Local birds like the water fowl, cuckoo, owl and water hen and other common varieties like the woodpecker, sky lark, crane and parrot can also be spotted here. It is a very beautiful place to live. It is a major tourist attraction.  
Kumarakom has a wide variety of houseboats and is well known throughout the world for houseboat experience. They are used only for tourists these days. A separate boat known as Kettuvallam is used by the people to go fishing or to transport goods. Apart from these, there are elegant special boats like Kochu-odi Vallam, Odi-Vallam, Iruttukutthi Vallam, Churulan Vallam and Chundan Vallam(Snake Boat), which take part in the boat races around Onam time. The Kumarakom boat-race is conducted in the big canal in the centre near the market. There is a private sailing club in Kumarakom, located on the shore of the Vembanad lake.
 
 
    Ettumanoor & Mahadeva Temple
 
Ettumanoor is a major town in Kottayam , located 11 kilometres north-east of Kottayam town, 65 km from Cochin and 73 km from Cochin International Airport. The state Highway No.1 popularly known as the Main Central (MC) Road, passes through Ettumanoor. Ettumanoor is en route to the tourist destinations Munnar (145 kms), Thekkady (120 kms), Kovalam (180 kms).

Mahatma Gandhi University (1983) is situated at 3 kms. Kottayam Medical College (1962) - The 3rd Govt. run Medical College in the State of Kerala is at 5 km.
The present temple building, with its gopuram and the fortress around it, was reconstructed in 717 ME (1542 AD). There are Dravidian mural paintings on the walls inside and outside of the main entrance. The fresco of Pradosha Nritham (Dance of Shiva) is one of the finest Wall paintings in India. It is believed that the great philosopher, Sankaracharya scripted the 'Soundaraya Lahari' staying in the temple.
 
 
 
Saint Alphonsa or Saint Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception
Saint Alphonsa or Saint Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception (August 1910 - 28 July 1946) was a Catholic Franciscan Religious Sister who is now honored as a saint, the first person of Indian origin to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church and the first canonized saint of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, was born in Kudamaloor, a neighbourhood of Ettumanoor. Bharananganam, an important pilgrim centre in South India, 5 km east of Pala in Kottayam where the holy physical mass of St. Alphonsa is buried. Bharananganam and surrounding places are bestowed with natural beauty due to hilly areas and lot of vegetation.
 
 
 
     
    Kaithamala Muhiudheen Masjid
 
Kaithamala Muhiudheen Masjid, situated at Parolikkal, 1.2 km away from the town is the oldest and most important one. Famous Thazhathangady Juma Masjid, reported to be one of the oldest mosque in India is only around 15 km away from the town. Another famous pilgrim center, Athirampuzha St. Mary's church is just 2 km away from this place.
